Esquay, July 1, 1944 (6:15 AM) The British had finally taken the summit of Hill 112 late the previous evening, albeit with appalling losses, and had fought of over twelve counterattacks since then. During the evening the Germans used the darkness to pull the 9th SS Panzer Division out of the line east of Hill 112. They were assembled in Esquay and at Maltot and were ordered to charge the hill at first light. Their support would come in the form of the 102nd Schwere Panzer Battalion who had been mauling the British for the previous 42 hours. The British in the square wood had no time for sleep during the night as they were either fighting of one counterattack after another, digging new entrenchments or were ducking continuous German harassing mortar fire.Attacker: German (SS) (5th Battalion, 10th Regiment, 10th SS "Frundsberg" Panzer Division)
