Overview:

On June 28, the British tanks on Hill 112 had been stung by the artillery spotters in the air-traffic control towers ta the airfield who could see every British movement. If the British were going ot take Hill 112 they had to secure this flank. The planned assault on the village of Carpiquet and its airfield was titled Operation Windsor. Defending the village and airfield were the fanatical 26th Regiment of the Hitler Youth who had held the town under repeated assaults for nearly two weeks. They were supported now by two infantry guns, dug in tanks, mortars and were now using the Luftwaffe's bombproof shelters to ride out the coming storm. Having finally learned from hard lessons the British brought "a whole toolbox full of tools" to use in the coming battle. The vilage would receive a bombardment from the Royal Navy battleships and 12 artillery units. When this lifted two brigades of tanks would swarm over the broken terrain followed by the engineer vehicles of the 79th Armored Division. To knock out strong points regimental heavy machine-guns and mortars and 1/2 platoon of Canadian Engineers were on hand. Two full squadrons of Typhoons would be circling the skies looking for targets to destroy. They would need all of these tools to take this little village from the battle-hardened SS.
