Overview:

The most important Soviet objective in the central sector of the 1944 summer offensive was the main Moscow-Minsk highway. This area had been bitterly contested in the previous fighting in the autumn and winter, and the Germans had the area heavily fortified and mined. The highway defenses were manned by the 78th Sturm Division commanded by Gen. Lt. Hans Traut, which was reinforced to hold this key objective. As a result the 11th Guards Army attacking toward Orsha used special assault groups. T-34's with minerollers attached supplemented the usually heavily armed assault engineer units as they advanced.
