Overview:
The US 1st Infantry Division was given the task of breaking into the Stolberg Corridor north of the brutal Hurtgen Forest fighting. While the 47th Infantry smashed their way through Gressenich to the west, the 1st Battalion of the 16th Infantry led the assault on the village of Hamich. Waiting in the forest outside of Hamich were the dug in German troops of the 48th Grenadiers, members of the elite 12th VGD.
