Overview:

"Chariots of Fire" - - After the Italian capitulation on 8th September 1943, Italy was now defended by only German troops, forcing them to skillfully make use of terrain and rivers to establish their defensive lines. On 20th November, in pouring rain, the Commonwealth troops arrived at the river Sangro. The next day, the 8th Indian Division successfully established a bridgehead on the north shore. The next task for the Indians was to seize the villages of Mozzagrogna and San Maria, dominating the line of approach and also serving as artillery observation posts for the enemy. The Germans have many roadblocks and minefields established, preventing the arrival of heavy equipment, and only the 17th Indian Infantry Brigade was able to attack. Nevertheless, on the 27th, two companies of Gurkhas mounted an assault on Mozzagrogna. After heavy fighting in close com-bat, the Gurkhas had occupied most of the village, but the Germans were not about to give up.
