Overview:

In early March 1937, after two offensives have failed, the nationalists launched a final operation to encircle Madrid. However, the forces of Franco were exhausted and could not provide support for the attack, so it was left to Mussolini’s expeditionary corps, the CTV (Corpo di truppi Volontare) to make the attempt. On 8th March, despite the rain and snow, the Italians broke through the Republican lines and quickly advanced along the road from Madrid to the French border. The defenders withdrew in good order and in the late afternoon were reinforced by the XIth International Brigade with its Paris Commune, Thalmann and Edgar Andre Battalions (the latter two composed in part of anti-fascist Germans). On the 9th and 10th of March, the Republicans offered fierce resistance and were able to slow the enemy advance. The next day, the fascists approached Trijueque. Facing them, the XIth Brigade was in position on both sides of the road to France, near the town of Casa Del Cobo.
