Overview:

The Imperial Japanese Navy was but a memory and the Leyte landings had gone on schedule. However, by early December, the U.S. X and XXIV Corps were in need of a supply center that could handle the volume for bases planned on Leyte. The largest commercial center in western Leyte that possessed a concrete and pile pier large enough for ocean transports was the town of Ormoc. The 77th Infantry Division would assault from both sides to isolate the Japanese defenders from the rest of the 35th Army.
