Under the pretext that Poland had appropriated certain Slovak territories during the Munich Crisis in September 1938, the Slovak government contributed three infantry divisions to the German Army Group South, specifically the 14th Army. They were tasked with flank protection of the eastern wing of the Army Group South’s initial thrust into the Carpathian area of Poland. One such town that had to be cleared was Sanok. The Polish units in the area were mainly lightly armed border units which did not have much in the way of artillery or heavy support weapons. The recon company moved into position and at once dismounted from their bicycles and wagons. They led an assault with support from some light mortars.

A methodical approach to the village ended with numerous failed shots by the Poles, culminating in a large number of Close Combat actions, which I suddenly realised I frontloaded the Polish defense with some Green troops, who immediately got ambushed and captured in various ways and combats. It was rather fun to see that interaction, as well as remembering that Interrogation was a thing. By Turn 4, the Slovaks had amassed enough Prisoner CVP that they simply needed to hold a building or two and be guaranteed a victory. The Polish forces were diminished to the point that achieving such success would be next to impossible.

Slovakian win
WARR tournament. A caution cat and mouse match - with Slovaks AMing to maintain concealment and Poles skulking - until turn 4 brawl over central buildings. A HoB surrender of a Slovak squad put the Poles at 4-2 CVP at Polish player turn 6 with no buildings in Slovak control, but a Slovak squad was able to CX along Western flank to seize one building at North edge and the Slovaks tipped the CVP scales and took the game on the last DR of the game with a CC capture of a Polish squad. Very tight game and good scenario, but Polish OB will seem quite thin unless DRs are decent. Probably better to concede building control to avoid CVP.

As Mark noted, a very tight scenario. The game turned on two last-turn long-odds DRs. I was ahead in CVP until I foolishly moved a concealed squad adjacent to a 8FP stack. He declared a shot and got a NMC. I rolled 1.1- HOB. My next DR resulted in surrender! He gobbled up 4 CVP right there and was in the lead. My last hope was a 50-50 CC for CVP and building control. The dice were kind, and the Slovaks pulled it off. A well-played game that could just as easily have gone the other way.

Draw
Slovakians pushed hard using a double envelopment. Poles kept breaking Slovakian squads but they rallied and kept forward. There were many CC combats and a couple surrenders, all the scenario the VP were even and finally the Slovakians won 14-13. Very tight.

Game 4 for the BCHW 2014 mini-tournament.
Jerry drew the Poles and setup. He covered the wheat field with a decent force and had that flak wagon in the middle, but too far forward. I setup entirely in the woods and pushed hard. Jerry initially broke a mortar squad and my kill stack with a MMG and LMG but I broke his pickets on the flank and pushed him back. I was able to shoot down the board edge before he could recover and I sealed the win by killing the flak wagon with direct fire from the machineguns. I was in the backfield for victory buildings and had a 6-1 CVP lead. Jerry conceded. This one is fun, but the Poles have to protect the wagon and cover the road to protect the victory buildings in their rear.

This one started out poorly for the Slovaks. He split his attack, most through the woods trail area and the rest up the grain. The grain attack was stopped cold by the mortar, AA truck, and a squad. Most of the game, it appeared the Slovaks would lose as they couldn't get a good result firing and couldn't pass a morale check. Lots of ELR for them to boot.
About turn 5 he got guys into the 2 buildings outside of the trailhead and then made a run around the backside to capture the 3 back buildings. The scenario swung there as I got a Polish squad and HS and the AA truck back, but moved too far up and lost the AA truck. He then broke and ELR'd the green squad while adjacent to secure the VP win with the prisoner points. Great perseverance fighting through a lot of mediocre rolls and herding the Slovaks around the map. Great final move to surround the last building and secure the win. Fun little tourney scenario, recommended.
