Overview:

4 CG Dates. . .After the Russian’s initial attempt to seize Cholm by storm in late January was rebuffed by KG Scherer, the Russians were not numerically strong enough to attempt a second major offensive until late February. In the interim they were content to level much of the town with artillery or burn it to the ground by setting the many thatched roofs alight with tracer fire in an effort to let Mother Nature do their work for them, as subzero temperatures and snow blanketed the area. This, together with the aid of their armor support, enabled the Russians, by mid-February, to secure a toehold on the eastern outskirts of the town, which they hoped to exploit when the time came for renewed offensive action. However as the Russians readied themselves for attack, they were not able to keep operational security as to their plans. Shortly before 23 February, two Russian soldiers defected into German lines, bringing with them news of an impending large scale Russian offensive.
