Overview:

The commander of the Japanese 2nd Battalion of 141st Infantry Regiment, Colonel Hifumi Imai, sent a report to General Nara. It detailed the fact that the Americans were on the attack. Nara sent a reconnaissance plane to check on the situation, and also instructed Colonel Takeo, the commander of the reserve 142nd Regiment, to send reinforcements south to support the 141st. Air recon showed his unit under intense artillery bombardment, so Nara immediately ordered counter-battery fire from brigade artillery, as well as air attacks. On the American side, the 2nd Battalion of the 21st Infantry Regiment (Philippine Army) had moved into the area behind the Philippine Scouts.
