Overview:

While Japanese reinforcements prepared for action on the Mabatang battlefield, soldiers of the Philippine Scouts were still battling for control of the field. At that point the battle had been reduced to multiple small skirmishes. Earlier in the day of January 13th, Colonel Arnold Funk took command of the 5th Regiment and moved the command-post. Forward of the command-pots, Captain Charlie Dempwolf, commander of A Company, 14th Engineers, saw an opportunity to use his combat engineers. Large amounts of TNT were on hand, and he and his men were of the mind to ‘blow something up’. Dempwolf proceeded to move his men forward and began dynamiting pockets of Japanese resistance, as well as trees and any enemy cover in front of the battalion’s position.
