Overview:
As part of Operation Cherry Blossom, the invasion of Bougainville, the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines were to land at Beach Blue 1 to seize Cape Torokina, while the 3rd Raider Battalion landed on Beach Green 2. Approximately 270 Japanese occupying eighteen log-and-sandbag pillboxes were defending Cape Torokina. At 0726, as the first troops hot the beach, they immediately came under heavy enemy fire that caused confusion among the landing force. Near Beach Green 2, the Japanese 75mm gun opened a devastating fire that played havoc with the approaching landing boats. It destroyed at least four boats and damaged ten others. In the confusion of battle, Sergeant Robert Allen Owens and elements of Company A, 3rd Marines, had landed west of Beach Blue 2 and ended up close to the Japanese gun near Beach Green 2. Sergeant Owens, seeing that rifle fire and grenades were having no effect to silence the gun, decided to take action.Attacker: American (USMC) (Elements Co.
