Overview:
The Black Shirts of the reinforced company defending the caposaldo (strongpoint) of Novo Orlovka had no time to realize it was Christmas Day. Thanks to the successful Italian night strike, the Russians paused, giving the defenders the opportunity to give more depth to their thin lines. However, most of the Italians slept as the Russians, without the usual warning of an artillery barrage, sent elements from a Penal Battalion and assault engineers forward to clear the way for two battalions of the 296th Division.
