Overview:
By late September 1942, German Forces were position to launch an assault to capture he vital clty of Grozry, cutting the Georgian Road along which American supplies were transported. As the German LII Korps reached the Terek River, the Soviet defences solidified, with several obstacle belts having to be breached, before the road could be reached. By early October, some of the bloodiest fighting took place involving the SS Division 'Wiking", composed of volunteers from Scandinavia, Finland, Estonia, and the Low Countries, but they were unable breach the defences. The division's commanding officer, Felix Steiner regrouped his regiments: 'Nordland', 'Germania', and Westland", supporting them with his dwindling panzers of 'Wiking' Regiment for one more assault to capture two chains of hills overlooking the town of Sagopschin and then the town itself, opening the way to Grozny.Attacker: German (SS) (1.
