Overview:

As the Americans struggled to defend the vital Veghel bridges, the situation was not looking hopeful for the Germans, but every hour they blocked Hell’s Highway, vital supplied were denied the Allied divisions fighting to the north. During the night of 22/23 September, Allied plans were drawn up, calling for Company F, 2/606th PIR to lead the attack to open the road to the north at daybreak. Throughout the night, the paratroopers could hear German vehicles moving to their front and they knew they were in for some heavy fighting in the morning. The Americans didn’t have to wait until then as two hours before daylight, German shells began falling among their positions. No sooner had the shelling let up, engines roared to life and from out of the pre-dawn darkness, German tanks and halftracks sped towards the Americans’ frontline with machineguns and cannons firing.

2018-12-22(A) Will Willow vs Jeff Waldon German winVASL
2015-11-23(A) Gordon Jupp vs Derek Cox German winInteresting game. Derek setup across the line so I pushed down the left flank - Turn 1 seemed a disaster for the Germans as I lost a HT and squad to a CH from one of the mortars and another squad in CC with a defending US squad. Encouraged by this success Derek didn't withdraw anyone from the front line but broke one of the bazookas and didn't do any more damage. Thus on turn 2 both the PzKpfw conducted overruns and the reinforcing 251's and PRC were able to motor down the left side and into the backfield, with one of the panthers now covering the direct route to the victory building at J32. On turn 3 I was able to capture J32 and broke multiple US squads as they scrambled to exit or take the building. It was over on turn 4 as one of the Panthers reached the victory area, along with a couple of 251's and no US squads exiting. Would play again and an interesting puzzle for both sides!
