Overview:

For the American 30th Infantry Division, Operation PLUNDER commenced on 24 March with a relatively quiet crossing of the Rhine. The division’s first main objective, the village of Spellen, was quickly taken by two of its regiments which attacked the German defenders from opposite directions. In the early morning of 25 March, 30th Division moved eastward, now in mutual support with light tanks and tank destroyers. They met only modest resistance from scattered German rear guards, and the lead units made good progress. The division’s three regiments now separated to assault different targets. Gahlen, a village centered on the axis of advance, was tasked to the 119th Regiment. However, the good mood of its soldiers changed drastically when the capture of troops from Panzer-Division 116 was reported. It seemed that “Old Hickory” had met some old friends from its Normandy days. 119th Regiment started its approach towards Gahlen only to be beaten to the punch by panzergrenadiers from Panzer-Division 116, which entered the village first. With some frustration, the lead elements of the 118th had to stand by and watch as more armored vehicles, among them two Panthers, followed…

2024-03-23(D) Vic Lauterbach vs JM German winLow DRs helped my cardboard "Windhund" KG win this one handily. I conceded the four multi-hex buildings west of the stream and held everything east of it. Jim pushed my screening units out of 59P4, N5, R3 and R5 in two turns, but lost 21 CVP doing it. That put me in the driver's seat. A StuG and the SPW 251/21 easily repulsed the M24s, M4/76s and platoon trying to reach the 10L3 building and L4 orchard. My HS w/PSK never took a shot. Even through SMOKE, fire from my central positions around building 59W8 stopped the US infantry cold. This could be a great scenario but played very pro-German for us. Jim: The US CVP cap combined with a good defense put this one out of reach fast. I tried for 7 buildings knowing Vic's Panzers wouldn't be where I could kill them easily and w/o killing 3+ AFVs, I had no chance for the German CVP cap. After early tank loses, my infantry got pounded crossing the stream. Losing the M4/105 and second M10 in GT4 put me one squad from my cap. I got the Drilling SPW and a PzIV in GT5 but tripped the cap, game over. US-German 1945 fights are generally fun, but the US player needs lots of SMOKE, some luck and the balance to win this one.

2021-05-31(D) Andy Bagley vs Josh Kalman American winIt's not often that I can claim the dice ended a game prematurely but that's what happened here. Within two consecutive player-turns I managed to malf 3 AFV MAs and 2 AFV MGs (all on boxcars, no IF involved). With a further tank lost to US fire, the Germans had virtually nothing left so we called it on GT3.
