Overview:

In early June 1944, the Germans launched Operation Sturmwind in eastern Poland, with the purpose of eliminating the partisans operating in the area of German lines of control and lines of supply as the Russians pressed the Wehrmacht forces westward. Using troops from three divisions, the Germans surrounded the Solska Forest encircling about 3000 partisans from the Home Army, the communist Armia Ludowa and Soviet detachments. On 14 June, the Germans attempted to crush the pocket – attacking into the woods with the objective of capturing the high ground of Porytowe Hill. . . .The Battle of Porytowe Wzgórze (Porytowe Hill) was the largest battle between underground anti-Nazi resistance and German occupation forces in occupied Europe. Some 600 German soldiers and 120 partisans fell at this battle.
