2019-03-22(D) X von Marwitz vs Michael Koch American winWell led US force with strong tank support has to root out German SS-troops from stone-buildings which have to conduct a fall-back defence supported by an AC and ht. I had the defending Germans. One has to weigh carefully how far up front to set up (to buy time) on one hand and to keep in mind options to fall back and not get caught by the US. The US has plenty of SMOKE making options. With 7 German squads, defences will be thin and the US can build a Schwerpunkt. My defenders could hold the US pretty well on the right flank. On the left flank, however, I was severely outnumbered. My AC managed to disrupt a large fire-group by placing SMOKE, however, it went down to a BAZ shot with a 27.8% probability of hitting. Next, one of the two 658s there broke, could extricate itself but failed to rally (58.3% chance for success). My other 658+LMG on that flank was shrouded in regular SMOKE. Another 658+LMG which could have lent support from the right was shrouded in WP. Then the US swarm closed in. My 658+LMG on the threatened flank attempted a FL but rolled boxcars to break the LMG, cower, and be marked by Final Fire. This chain of events allowed the US to encircle the 658+LMG, the broken 658 and my 8-1, which were taken prisoner and the leader killed in CC (no success in attempting to despatch one of the tanks with a PF singlehandedly to create an escape-path). With that the US gained 10 VP (for US prisoners do count double), while I had only a destroyed Sherman (7VP) to show for it. 4 US squads rallied, so he was back up to numbers. Worst thing was that the German left flank was completely smashed and the way into the backfield open for the US with nothing to stop or delay them. US Sniper broke the 348+PSK, so I called it a day. US win. It can be an interesting scenario if the defenders do not all break in the same area. As so often, with those 5-Turn scenarios with few units, there is no room and time to recover if things go awry.
