Overview:

After the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines cleared the formidable roadblock at the intersection of Ma Po Boulevard and the road into the Chungnim-Jong section of the city, Easy Company, now under the command of Captain Frederick, who had replaced Captain Sanford, who was evacuated for wounds, proceeded enroute towards the French Embassy, one of the battalion's objectives for the day. Along the way New York Times correspondent Richard J.H. Johnston, who knew Seoul well enough from assignments before the war, attached himself to Easy Company. The company in-turn benefitted from the newspaperman's knowledge of the backstreets of Seoul. At 1057 after a brief fight the Marines raised the Stars and Stripes over the embassy of the United States' oldest ally, France.
