Overview:

The key to conquest of the Sinai front was the Abu-Ageila road junction. Significant Egyptian forces stood in the way, including 100,000 soldiers and over 900 tanks, backed by a massive quantity of APCs and artillery. A numerically inferior Israeli force planned on using the element of surprise, timing ground attacks with the IDF/AF strikes on Egyptian airfields. The southern division, commanded by Major General Ariel Sharon faced heavily defended enemy positions manned by the Egyptian 2nd Infantry Division, bolstered by a battalion of tank destroyers and a tank regiment. Sharon's plan sent two of his brigades north to Um-Katef, tasked with breaking through the enemy lines at Abu-Ageila to the south and to block the road to El-Arish.
