Overview:

After the Allied landing at Salerno and the consolidation of the bridgehead, the advance towards Naples continued. One of the first objectives entrusted to the British 7th Armored Division was the capture of a bridge over the Sarno River in the town of Scafati. The day was stormy and the town was defended by troops from the Panzergrenadier Regiment 2 of the Hermann Goring Division. British forces with the help of Italian partisans, managed to capture intact the Bridge that had been prepared for its demolition. The Germans launched their first counterattack with the 11./Sturmgeschutz-Abteilung of Panzer Regiment Hermann Goring, managing to destroy an enemy tank, an observation post and some machine gun and infantry positions, but did not recapture the bridge. At 6:00 p.m. they launched a second counterattack, this time with tanks from I. Panzer Regiment HG and 9./Fallschirmjager Regiment 1, with mortar support, with the aim of destroying the bridge.
