Overview:
In August, General Gay replaced the 5th Cavalry Regiment's aging and near-deaf commander Colonel Carl Rohsenberger with the more dynamic Marcel Crombez. Colonel Crombez had missed most of WWII in stateside training assignments but served in the post-war occupation of South Korea, where he learned the land and peopJe well. Hard charging and determined to not let this war pass him by, he saw the breakout from the Naktong as his opportunity to be the first to the North Korean capital of P'yongyang. 1st Cavalry Division crossed the 38th Parallel on 9 October headed for Kumch'on, and 5th Cavalry Regiment encountered heavy resistance from the KPA 19th and 27th Divisions along a ridge northeast of Kaesan. Crombez was ordered to bypass the opposition and by doing so inadvertently put his regiment into the operational area of the ROK 1st Division.Attacker: United Nations ((American) 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry and (South Korean) 15th Regiment, 1st Division)
