Overview:

After the successful capture of Cleve in Operation VERITABLE, the next stop for the British would be the capture of Goch. To move swiftly before the Germans could recover from the loss of Cleve, a "jock" column of the 46th Highland Brigade Group moved out on the main road to the southwest. The column consisted of the 7th Seaforth Highlanders, a squadron of Coldstream Guards tanks, Kangaroos of the 49th Royal Tank Regiment, the Canadian Armoured Regiment, and a battery of self-propelled guns. The group arrived at Qualberg, a small village two miles east of Cleve. After a sharp engagement there, the group moved under constant artillery and mortar fire to the next village-Hasselt.

2024-05-06(A) Simon Staniforth vs Ian Morris British winThe mud pretty much confines the British opening moves to the road network and it’s just a question of when the HIP Gun and Jadgpanthers pop up how much damage they can do. Sure enough I kindly moved into all the bore sighted hexes losing a Sherman and a couple of Rams with 2 squads. But at least those HIP units were all on the board T1. A further Ram was KO by a PF but, taking the backblast, the firing squad was reduced to a broken Conscript HS which is a painful loss with only 9 squads in the OB. Thereafter one of the Shermans got seriously in the game with 3 critical hits eliminating a third of the remaining German squads and a “snake eyes” from the Croc was another KIA. By T4, although the Brits had steadily been losing men and vehicles, it was clear there just weren’t enough Germans left to stop the British sweeping through and capturing the required buildings so we called it. Mud isn’t played very often and it’s amazing how much slower it makes getting forward whether vehicles or infantry. I definitely had the dice in this one, if the Germans can fall back in good order it’s a much closer game
