Overview:

Beginning near the town of Soroksár, Soviet northward thrusts towards the Budapest met with consistent, stubborn, and even fanatical, resistance from the outnumbered Hungarian Army. The Hungarian paratroopers, in particular, demonstrated cunning and elan on the battlefield, much to the frustration of the Red Army. The confidence that came with this success led one commander to propose a daring raid that would knock the Russians off-balance, upset their timetable and thereby provide the defenders of the capital city more time to prepare for the inevitable battle to come. To carry out this attack, Major Lázló Pokorny assembled a small group of paratroopers and prepared them for what was deemed a suicide mission: a daylight raid on the town of Taksony, with only a few self-propelled AA guns in support.
