Overview:
As part of the larger Operation SILVER FOX, which aimed to capture or disable the port of Murmansk, the initial goal of Operation ARCTIC FOX was the capture of the Finnish village of Salla. For this task, a joint German-Finnish force was formed, which consisted in part of the 6th and 7th Motorized SS Infantry Regiments, which had been transferred from Norway and given the somewhat grandiose title of the 6th SS Mountain Division Nord. This division, along with with the 169th Division (Heer) further north, attacked Salla from the west. Meanwhile, the Finnish 6th Division conducted a pincer movement intended to press the Soviet defenders on their eastern flank.Attacker: German/Finnish (6.
