Overview:

Since 1943, the maquis (French Resistance Fighters) had been using the scenic plateau known as the Mastif de Vercors as a staging ground and refuge, where occasional Allied air drops provided them with weapons and supplies necessary to continue their campaign of harassment against the German occupation. Following the Allied landings in Normandy, the resistance carried out sabotage operations in the area, fully expecting the arrival of another Allied landing force in southern France that would assist them in the fight. When the promised second liberation force did not materialize, the FFI Commander wired the following message to London: "We shall not forget the bitterness of having been abandoned alone and without support in time of battle."
