Overview:

The Soviet counteroffensive against Army Group Center had begun. A Siberian ski battalion had broken through the lines of the 36th Motorized Division and had disappeared into the German rear areas. Two days later it appeared outside General Schaal's LVI Panzer Corps Headquarters. In desperation, typical of the battles elsewhere, the staff officers, runners, and clerks snatched up their weapons and defended their positions. The Siberians attempted to flank the village from the north only to be stopped at the gates by machine guns led by the Corps Operations Officer. Repulsed for now, the Soviets fell back. Overnight each side reinforced, the Germans with tattered elements of the 1st Rifle Regiment and the Russians with armor support. The assault renewed in the morning with the Russian tanks smashing their way into town.
