Overview:

During July the German Fourteenth Army's stubborn withdrawal up the Italian peninsular slowed. The intention of the German command was to keep the Allies out of the valley of the River Arno and give their reserve divisions time to prepare the Gothic Line, which ran from the Gulf of Genoa across Italy north of Florence to Pesaro on the Adriatic. The New Zealand Division slowly fought its way northward. On the morning of 22 July, B Company of the 23rd Battalion launched an attack on the village of San Martino. After gaining a foothold in the village the battalion 'had to withdraw after two hours' terrific battle'. At midday, A Company moved up and renewed the assault supported by elements of the Divisional Cavalry and the Battalion Field Company.
Attacker: New Zealand (A and B Companies, 23rd New Zealand Battalion/1 Troop, A Squadron, Divisional Cavalry Regiment)

2025-07-13(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM New Zealand winI drew the small but tough force of Kiwis facing an equally tough force of Fallschirmjaegers in this Italian fight. I guessed where the AT mines were and drove around Jim's right flank for building oX1. I got stuck in a fierce battle for building oV6 and things looked grim. In spite of repeated breaking a fixing their MA, the Staghounds contributed mostly by firing / generating Smoke. I finally took building oV6 on turn 5 then oY8 fell on turn 7. By then, my 8-1 and fanatic 648 had slipped around it and grabbed unoccupied CC9 and DD10. Jim: My plan was to hold the back five buildings (north of the oY1-Y10 road). The Semovente avoided getting trapped in oS5 but got immobilized then knocked out in a gun duel with the HD Staghound C.S. My Green Devils were deadly in CC early on, so I hoped Vic would run out of GO MMC infantry to take oY8. Instead, I ran out of MMC to hold the back buildings. When the FFE and Staghound sM8 screened my MMG in oY8L1 and Vic got a SMC and MMC around my left flank, it was over. The German force is so small, you can't put MMC in every building and still have enough firepower anywhere to stop 8-ML squads. Good game but a definitely pro-NZ.
