Overview:

The 1st Rifle Corps was heavily reinforced with tanks and assault guns for the initial attacks of Operation Bagration. They were ordered to attack in conjunction with adjacent corps and make deep penetrations to the Dvina River to cut off the German grouping in Vitebsk. The first trench line was taken on 22 June, but the main attack would not start until the next day. The attack was launched in overcast conditions, which hindered close air support. The 357th Rifle Division ran into Korps Detachment D, which was actually a division sized special unit, composed of various battalions and regiments thrown together. The Detachment was also reinforced with assault guns.
Attacker: Russian (Reinforced elements of 357th Rifle Division, 1st Rifle Corps, 43rd Army)
Defender: German (Elements of Korps Detachment D, 3rd Panzer Army)

2025-04-17(D) Diane Spangler vs Lawrence SpanglerD German win
2024-08-28(D) Simon Staniforth vs CB German winA tough fight for both sides. As the Germans you have to spread your assets - Entrenchments, Wire, Mines - around somewhat as the Russians have variable entry conditions meaning they can effectively attack the village from all directions. Similarly with the Guns so I kept those hidden until T3 when my reinforcing infantry and StuGs got onto the board. A tense fight thereafter, the Russians got a total of 18 buildings but the Germans had just enough strength - and some good dice in Prep Fire - to take back the 3 needed for a win in the final half turn.
