Overview:
"A Prince in a Vice"- At the end of summer 1944, the situation of the German troops based in Greece and Yugoslavia worsened. The defection of Romania and Bulgaria opened a huge breach, into which flooded the Red Army. The Germans had to restore a front on the Bulgarian-Yugoslav border to protect the withdrawal of their forces from Greece. However, few experienced units, motivated and properly equipped, were available. The sector’s strongest unit, the SS Division Prinz Eugen, composed of Balkan Volksdeutsche, was thus withdrawn from the fight against Tito’s partisans and took position around the major road and rail junction of Nis. This unit, the flagship of the German forces in Yugoslavia was facing a Bulgarian army, a Soviet army and two corps of Serb partisans.
