Overview:

"Gates of the Reich" Campaign game with 5 CG dates - - - At the end of the summer of 1944, the situation of the Germans on the western front seemed hopeless. For the first time since the outbreak of hostilities, German soil is seriously threatened by the Western Allies, in this case the American 1st Army under Hodges, in position east of Liege. On 2nd October, the GI’s attacked the Siegfried Line in the Aix-la-Chapelle sector. The West Wall was breached and the assailants began the encirclement of the city. If Aachen had no military value, that was not true of its symbolic importance. Goebbels presented the city as the German “Stalingrad” and all available reinforcements were sent there. The American infantrymen of the 1st and 30th Divisions nevertheless continued their advance despite enemy counterattacks. On 9th October, a company of the 119th Regiment of the 30th Division, in position at Bardenburg, a large village north of Aix, saw several German half-tracks heading east. They were the vanguard of the 108th Panzer brigade which aimed to take the village and cut off the American troops encircling Aix. - - - LATER PUBLISHED IN ENGLISH IN Franc-Tireur #10.
