Overview:

The Red Army launched the Lvov-Sandomierz offensive after OKH had stripped Army Group North Ukraine to the bare bones in order to plug the holes left by a crumbling Army Group Center. This attack was a major operation in its own right, designed to liberate the last remaining Soviet territory still being held by the Germans. To help slow the Bolshevik hordes, the Nazis recruited thousands of Russia-phobic local nationalits groups to aid in the defense of their homelands. One such unit was called SS-Infanterie-Division 14 “Galicia”, though it was composed mainly of Ukrainian troops with German officers. Although only nominally trained, they were determined to give a good fight on the rolling hills of eastern Poland.
Attacker: Russian (Cavalry Mechanized Group Baranov)
Defender: German (SS) (SS Infanterie-Division Galicia, Security-Division 424, Panzer-Division 17)

2025-07-06(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM Russian winThis odd East Front clash pits a very mobile Soviet force against a very brittle Ukranian "SS in name only" force. I pushed hard to threaten both of Jim's flanks and ultimately got dismounted cavalry off the north edge and the SU-85s and a carrier off the south edge. If you can avoid giving up -2 shots at cavalry, but keep your force moving, this one is very winnable. Jim: I put up token resistance around 2bA13 then fell back to the hill, but I was too cautious with the Nashorn and PzIVs. The Nashorn killed the T-34 early but never got a clear shot at an SU-85. My PzIVs parked on the hill and took on the SU-85s that drove around it, but they missed, and the SU-85 didn't. The 50L hit the SU-85s to NE, and Vic kept them out of deliberate immobilization range. This one was a bit more fun than I expected but didn't seem pro-German to me!
