Overview:

The surprise Soviet blitzkrieg across the eastern border of Manchukuo did not necessarily seal the fate of the Japanese 5th Army. The key was the quick capture of a great railroad bridge spanning the Mutan River north of the strategic city of Mutanchiang. The point unit, the Soviet 257th Tank Brigade, roared into Hualin just over a mile northeast of the bridge. Under orders to maintain the advance with all speed, a reinforced tank company was sent down the road in hopes of achieving a second coup de main that day. . .

2021-02-16(D) David Garvin vs Nick Faryna Russian win
2020-07-15(D) Paul Works vs Dan Best Japanese winRussians must decide on turn 2 or 3 whether to a) try to run the gauntlet of the likely Japanese ambush set up in the bottleneck between the woods and marsh along the one (and only) road, or b) attempt to skirt around the woods and hope to withstand whatever secondary defenses the Japanese have placed in that area. During this scenario, I held my fire until Dan's first two tanks hand entered into my trench-line and AT minefield. I then opened fire with multiple mortars, MGs, and infantry. During this first fuselage, Dan lost three of his nine squads and I was able to use MOLs to burn two of his tanks right in the trench hexes. As he reformed his infantry and used his tanks to fire at my infantry, I moved one squad up the trenches and in CC immobilized a third tank. That squad died as Dan's 9-2 came into play. Dan then attempted to drive another tank through the trench-line, but bogged in the trenches. He also moved three of his tanks to flank around the woods. He cornered my 10-1 and two remaining step-reduced squads (from the main ambush-line) in the last trench and moved into CC with a berserk 6-2-8 (caused by a DC hero attack that did nothing but berserk his squad...), his 9-2 (now wounded by my sniper), and two other 6-2-8s. In the ensuing CC, I split my attacks and rolled a "2" and a "3;" ouch. This killed his wounded 9-2, reduced a squad, and KIA'd the berserk squad - at the cost of the entire Japanese stack - worth it, though. In the meantime, one of my INF guns had malf'd on its first shot and was disabled during a repair attempt. My other INF gun deliberately immobilized another T-34 and a DC hero took it out (the only one of six DC heroes that actually worked). On his flank-moving tanks, I tried three DC heroes against one of his SU-76s, but all failed. One got through to attack, but rolled a "12" on the DC. One of my 50mm mortars got a CH vs a T-34 and immobilized it. My AT mines in the ambush area did not catch any of the Russian tanks moving that way, but as he moved his flankers around, he ran into my last mine on that side and the pesky SU-76 was immobilized. At this point, Dan had one tank that could possibly have pressed toward the exit area, but would have had to fight off several Japanese squad attacks with MOLs and multiple mortar shots. No Russian infantry made it past the the ambush-line. We called it at this point because not enough Russian VP remained as mobile AFVs to win the game (and not enough Japanese losses had been inflicted).
