Overview:

Having been allies off and on for centuries against a variety of enemies, the defending German and Hungarian forces had developed what some soldiers referred to as a “war brotherhood” or “Waffenbruderschaft”. This bond would be sorely tested throughout the day as elements of several German and Hungarian formation banded together with the intent of retaking the recently captured Kis-Svabhegy. On the Soviet side, the recent withdrawal of the 1897th and 1505th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiments had left the 320th Rifle Division without any substantial armor support. While awaiting the arrival of the T-34/85s of the “Budapest Group”, the Soviet infantry firmly entrenched themselves into the heights of the Kis-Svabhegy, relying on their field artillery and mortars to fend off the series of multi-company, combined arms assaults that the Axis launched.
