Overview:

The 4th Marine Division had made its combat debut the previous day by landing at Roi-Namur. Now, it was time for the final push to the north shore of Namur. Command for this last assault was given to thirty-five year old Lieutenant Colonel Aquilla James Dyress, commander of the 1st Battalion, 24th Marines (Reinforced). The assault began at 0900 with four Sherman tanks in support. The Japanese put up a steady resistance amid bomb-damaged foliage and shattered buildings. Tank crews used the technique of firing AP rounds to crack the buildings' concrete walls, then firing HE rounds to finish off the defenders. Progress on the right was delayed until 1000 when the tanks reached this area. The Marines first task was to eliminate a determined group of enemy soldiers who held an annoying blockhouse that had delayed the Marines since the first day at Namur.
