Overview:

The Korsun Pocket drama had been unfolding for some time. German High Command was not inclined to let yet another pocket fall to the oncoming Soviets. thus, it was necessary to form a Kampfgruppe strong enough to tackle the Soviet defense and mobile enough to both cover the distance and defeat the snow and mud. While the Germans had captured a bridge over the only major terrain obstacle between them and the trapped forces, more exit routes were necessary. One such route was identified at the large village of Lysyanka where an intact bridge over the Gniloi Tikich still existed.
