Overview:

The 11th Army, advancing on the right side of Army group South, skirted the Rumanian border with the Black Sea port of Odessa as its primary objective. The small town of Balta, located 120 miles northwest of Odessa, had changed hands several time during recent fighting, but was currently held by the Russians in battalion strength. As the German 239th Infantry Division attacked to the east of the town, and the Rumanian 6th Infantry attacked to the west, the 744th Engineer Regiment, less one company, was ordered to take Balta, preparatory to building a 24 ton highway bridge across the Kodyma River just south of the town.
Attacker: Russian (Balta Garrison)
Defender: German / Romanian (Company C, 744th Engineer Regiment and Rumanian 6th Infantry)

2024-02-12(D) O Ramaille vs Russian winThe Germans tried to take building 3M2 with a small force but were finally eliminated while the main assault came from both the Northwest with the Romanians and from the Northeast with the German engineers. The assault was a bloody hell with Russian tanks blazed and all the grain field on fire. The Russian held a lot with successful defensive fires. They also paid a heavy toll. The Romanians finally broke through and secured one of the access to the Kodyma river. The Germans forced their way into the village but without enough men to push back the Russians and secure the other access. CVP : 63/58 in favor of the Germans but a Russian victory.
2023-06-18(D) Kevin Duval vs Dwayne DuvalD Russian winRussians still had substantial forces on both VC areas on Germans Turn 10 . Hopelessly under strength for any attempt at a final push.
2023-06-18(A) Dwayne Duval vs Kevin DuvalA Russian win
2016-08-07(D) Vic Lauterbach vs MA German / Romanian winBoth players should read Jim Stahler's analysis in Journal #2 because it takes balls of iron to play this one with either side! This is old school ASL, lots of squads and lots of turns. The early game was a fight for building 3M2, the middle game a fight for 3R3 and 3R5 and the end game a fight for 3Z1 and 3X3. The Germans have too much time. In this game, the Russian 7-0 got radio contact on GT6 but drew two red chits in a row. Without OBA, the board became littered with broken conscript squads and it was over at the end of GT9. Very tense at times, like when the StuG MA broke and a mild breeze sprang up, but both problems were gone in one GT. Allow 20+ hours to finish this one.
2016-06-25(D) Gordon Jupp vs Ian Pollard Russian winPlayed at D1 2016, great fun, nice to play a large scenario!
