Overview:

The first German attack on the Polish capital of Warsaw, on the 8th of September, was in reality a probe by elements of the 4th Panzer Division. This probe occurred in the Ochota district and was easily repulsed. The fighting in Warsaw largely abated after these initial thrusts as German units were drawn off to counter the Bzura counteroffensive. But later the Germans pounded the city for two days culminating in a massive air and artillery attack on September 25 that went down in legend as Black Monday. The Germans and Poles were soon locked in bloody close quarters combat in the rubbled terrain.
