Lt. Lawson Neel, an antitank platoon leader, set up his only remaining AT gun behind his second road-blocking position of the day just 800 meters outside of St. Barthelmy. He had been chased back by elements of the 2nd SS Panzer Division. The SS tanks moved quickly through the American infantry. Just outside a French farmhouse, dubbed “Chateau Nebelwerfer” due to the attention it drew from the deadly German rockets, Lt. Neel and his men came face to face with yet another German tank, this time a Panther. They scored a direct hit on the side with no visible effect, but the crew bailed out.
