The road from St. Vith to Vielsalm ran straight through the railroad junction of Poteau, which had become vitally important to the Germans as their offensive bogged down in both the north and south. To keep the attack moving forward somewhere, Feldmarschall Model backed up the retreating elements of SS-Panzer-Division 1 with fresh troops and tanks of Brigade-fuhrer Sylvester Stadler’s SS_Panzer-Division 9 “Hohenstauffen”.
