Overview:

During Operation Market-Garden, BG Shan Hackett moved the remains of his 4th Para Brigade to disengage from the vicinity of Wolfhezen into what the Germans would eventually call ‘Der Kessel’ around Oosterbeek. Spearheaded by the 10th Para Battalion, the brigade moved southeast through woods carrying on a running fight, often times using captured weapons to replace their own. Kampfgruppe Lippert engaged 4th Para forcefully, but failed to strike a fatal blow due to the violence of the British attack and the intervention of General von Tettau. At 13:30, the commander of the 10th Para Battalion entered the British lines with 60 of his beleaguered battalion, but Hackett and most of the 156th Para were still fighting in the woods from a hollow. At 16:30, Hackett decided it was time to make a break for it.

2023-03-05(D) Andy Bagley vs Simon Staniforth British winAs well as having good troops including a 10-2 leader, the British attackers have dummies and the ability to enter on Turn 1 OR LATER. This means that the Germans can't immediately rush their forces over to whichever side of the board the British first appear on. My opponent used this advantage well, and came on mostly through the wooded area. I suspected this would be the case and put most of my strength on that side, but a series of early snakeyes against me negated much of this strength (including gaining him a hero and a fanatic squad), and shot dead a 658 trying to dash across a road to help. The British attack was nicely paced, and by my turn 5 it was evident I would not be able to stop him getting the required VPs off, so I conceded.
