Overview:

Japanese forces had conquered Borneo quickly at the onset of the war in order to exploit its oilfields. During its four-year occupation of the island. Japanese forces subjected both the small Allied military contingent that opposed the invasion as well as the native population to extremely harsh treatment, including forced labor and massed executions. Liberation finally came in the form of Operation OBOE, the last major Allied amphibious campaign of the Secord World War. OBOE 2 was the specific designation give to the landings at Balikpapan, where Australian forces came ashore on 1 July virtually unopposed. Upon landing, the Aussies immediately moved to capture the airfield at Manggar, which lay a few miles north of the town.
